Ever had a bad hair day? Just about everyone has one once in a while – even hairstylists.

Twitter me your favorite bad hair day tips @jaymedrayton !

When your out there taking care of business or on the town, wanting to look your best, your hair frizzes, curls, or flops and then you’re in a hairy situation. You probably don’t even know it until you’ve check in the bathroom mirror sometime after lunch. Or even worse, you are on a date and take a peek into compact and that’s when you think “No! Have I looked like this all night!?”

So what to do?

Well, its always handy to have emergency hair supplies in your make-up bag or purse. Here are my top suggestions:

  • Rubber bands. Tame that mess by pulling it back into a neat ponytail, braid, or bun.
  • Dry Shampoo. It is a must for traveling or for hot Summer days especially like the ones we have here in Gainesville, Florida! Comb dry shampoo through hair for a fresh clean look. You can also use a bit of baby powder, but only use it very lightly because it will make your hair powdered white!
  • Always keep a quality brush in your purse or car.
  • Locking bobby pins. These are my sister, Krystal Reeser’s favorite! She likes them because they are a little more secure than regular bobby pins. You can use them to pull back the top, or your bangs, or can even be used to lock back the sides.
  • Bobby pins. Bobby pins are a simple way to secure your hair. Always good in a bun, french twist, or poof up the top and secure with bobbys for the high crown look.
  • Mini Hair lotion. Keeping a small tube of hair lotion around always helps you fight the frizzes.
  • Mini Hair Spray. Keeping a mini-hair spray around can really save the day!

Of course there are hairsticks, scrunchies, and other creative products that can help smooth those course treses.

What is your favorite hair trick for bad bair days?

Did you guys see the Princess Protection Program with Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato? Did you see Lovato’s cool princess hair and want to do it yourself?
Demi Lovato sports a lovely crown braid in the early part of the movie. A crown braid is a very elegant old-world hairstyle that is not seen too often anymore, but it is a classic that I was glad to see appear in this movie. The crown braid is a classical style up-do that has a braid that wraps around the head like a crown. One of my favorite braiding sites has instructions for crown braids, here are the links: dreamweaverbraiding.com

This site is great because it is complete with step-by-step instructions and pictures! Here is a link directly to the the crown braiding instructions:

The bride’s headdress should match the kind of wedding she is going to have or match the theme of her wedding. A tiara would match a wedding that had a princess or fairytale theme. A veil would be the traditional bridal look. Some brides choose to wear flowers in their hair instead of a veil or tiara.

A floral headdress pairs well with a natural themed wedding. Outdoor weddings always pair well with flowers in the bride’s hair. Garden weddings, beach weddings, or other outdoor venues are beautiful wedding settings and a flower headdress would be a perfect match.

What kind of flowers should you choose? Here are some great flowers to choose from:

  • White Roses
  • Orchids (especially great for a beach wedding)
  • Baby’s Breath
  • Light Pink Roses
  • Ask your florist for seasonal suggestions

More tips:

  • Make sure that the flowers in your hair match your bouquet and the rest of the flower arrangements and decorations at your wedding. Having mix-matched arrangements will be a distraction away from the beauty of your wedding.
  • Keep flowers refrigerated as long as possible before the ceremony.
  • Unless you have arranged flowers before, hire a professional florist for your wedding. Flowers are one of the most important decorations in your wedding. Beautiful flowers = Beautiful wedding. Designing floral arrangements and putting them together can take many hours even with a team of people and will make your fingers stained green. Mishandling the flowers can cause them to wilt before the ceremony.
  • Tell your hairstylist if you plan to include flowers in your hair in advance. Bring a picture of the hairstyle you want to your cosmetologist.

Want some more tips on choosing flowers for your hair? Check out this article on eHow.com on wearing flowers in your hair for your wedding.

For my wedding, I got my bridal bouquet from Floral Expressions. They did an excellent job! I called Floral Expressions only after receiving my flowers from another florist that gave me the wrong bouquet. I called the florist that gave me the wrong bouquet and they would not answer their phone. That’s when I called Floral Expressions and explained to them what happened. They rushed me the right bouquet in time to take my pre-ceremony pictures! I should have gone with Floral Expressions to begin with, as they came highly recommended to me. Thanks Floral Expressions for saving the day! http://www.floralexpressionsflorist.com/

Get your haircut before your job interview!

A neat haircut and a fresh trim can really give you a polished appearance. Some women may even want to have their hair styled by a cosmetologist before the interview. For most people, a trim is all that is necessary to prepare their hair for a job interview.

Here are some other tips for landing the job:

  • Check your nails. Make sure most importantly that your nails are clean and neat. Some jobs such as in the medical field or food service may require you to either not wear nail polish or wear neutral colored polish.
  • Hands. The first thing that you will probably do on your job interview is shake hands- be sure they leave a good impression. Wash hands and make sure that they are clean of hair gels, lotions, or make-up products.
  • Shoes: Make sure that your shoes are clean and neat. It is often noted in the business world that you can tell a lot about a person by there shoes. This might be because it is an often overlooked detail. In some circumstances, it would be appropriate to wear a shoe similar to what you would wear on the job if you got it. In some working environments, you maybe required to wear closed toed shoes, it might also be appropriate to wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes while interviewing, keeping in mind that you might also be offered a tour of the facility. Polish shoes.
  • Minimal jewelry. This applies to both men and women.
  • Socks and pantyhose: Socks should match shoes. Dress socks would be appropriate for most interviews. Ladies wearing panty hose should wear a nude color.
  • Minimal perfume and cologne.
  • Teeth: Look at your teeth in the mirror before going in to the interview. If you eat, check your teeth again. Ladies, check for a lipstick smear that might have transfered on to your teeth.
  • Make-up: Ladies, wear a moderate amount of make-up. Go for a natural look.
  • Dyed hair: If you have dyed your hair, make sure that it isn’t washed out or that your roots aren’t showing.

Call me and schedule your appointment for your haircut or trim. Usually its best to try to schedule your hair appointment a day or two before your job interview.

Make sure that you are own time for the interview and that you bring pen and paper to write notes with!

Best Wishes to Job Searchers!

So, you’ve seen Bumpits on TV and now in some stores, but before you go out and buy your own — you want to know if it really works?

Krystal Reeser, who loves the high crown look, decided to try Bumpits and give us the PROS and CONS of the product:

PROS

  • Get the “High Crown” or “poof on top” look that you want

CONS

  • Harder to use than shown in TV Commercial
  • Still have to tease hair, so teeth won’t show through
  • Can’t touch or bump hair after its inserted or teeth will show through
  • The bumpit style can be really unnatural looking unless you tease hair, and carefully lay hair over Bumpit
  • Must place on right spot on head, so your head doesn’t look a weird shape.
  • Can be uncomfortable sometimes
  • Pulling the Bumpit out of hair can cause hair damage
  • Can see shadow through hair sometimes if you pass by a light

The downlow on the teasing:
With the bumpit you will tease less, but you will still be teasing a lot. In fact, the more you tease, the better your hair will look with the Bumpit. Unfortunately, teasing is extremely damaging to your hair.
The best look for healthy hair is to, of course, avoid all teasing and style hair in a less damaging way. For those of you who still desire this look, you can buy the Bumpits in my online store.

Tips for Looking Your Best, If you choose to use a Bumpit:

  • Rat tail comb can pull up hair in spots that the hair has settled and shows Bumpit’s teeth. Pull up very gently!
  • For a longer lasting hold, secure with bobby pins on the top-center on back of head.
  • Use hairspray liberally.
  • Follow directions in Bumpit Package

Thanks to Krystal Reeser for sharing her experience with the Bumpit. Krystal is a webdesigner, writer, and photographer. In her free time, she enjoys spending her time with her husband Jedidiah Reeser and playing with their dog. Check out her work at KrystalReeser.com.

Selena Gomez is a young star who has been working with the Disney Channel for several years. Most recently, she  starred in the just released film Princess Protection Program. As with most Disney stars, Selena always sports great hairstyles. Here is one of her best hairstyles that she appears in often and she wore to the 2007 Teen Choice Awards.

How can you get gorgeous wavy locks like Selena Gomez? If you have medium to long hair with some layers, here is a how to get those luscious tresses at home:

  • Start with freshly washed hair.
  • Add a small palm full of mousse along the length of your hair
  • Part your hair to the side using a comb (Selena parts on right side)
  • Take pieces of your moussed hair and roll it on a round brush. Round brush it outwards, while using the blowdryer to dry one piece at a time – start at the back of your head. Hold the blowdryer on the piece a little longer for a fuller look.
  • On the sides of your head, twist up and clip the top layer of hair on top of your head. Then blowdry with a roundbrush the bottom layer. Roll the roundbrush up your hair shaft and kick the curl outwards.
  • Roundbrush out the top layers while blowdrying.
  • Grab your curling iron, and put gentle curls into each layer starting at the bottom. Mostly add curl at the ends of the hair on each layer. Curl each strand for 10 seconds.
  • Scrunch hair with a little more mousse or some wax.
  • Rinse your hands and dry them, then apply a small amount of hairspray to roots. Comb fingers through hair and lift up hair and hold for a few seconds while hairspray is drying. This will give you extra volume.
  • Take hair spray and spray all over your style at an arm’s legnth away from your head.
  • Give your hair a once over. Check for eveness and smooth down, scrunch up, or curl where necessary. Remember to add a touch more hairspray if you need it.

Enjoy your Selena styled hair!

Eva Mendes always has great hair. Several of her almost trademark hairstyles are pretty easy to at home, this post will show you how and its great as a pretty and feminine look for professional ladies who need to keep their hair pulled back, such as nurses, doctors, lab technicians, and other ladies who need to keep their hair up.

Eva often appears with a ponytail or a bun with a high crown and a few bang pieces framing the face. To get this look:

Start by blow-drying hair upside down for a full- look. Then when the roots of your hair are mostly dry, switch to blow-drying hair straight with three-inch round brush. Then come all your hair back. Pull hair in a high ponytail on the back of your head and secure with a rubber band. Use a rubber band that is close to your own hair color. To keep hair looking full on top, pull everything but the top layer of hair tightly back into the ponytail, leaving the top layer a little more fluffy on top. Gently loosen your bangs from the pony and push them to the side of your face. Smooth down fly aways with a light cream and at the end of your pony, smooth the ends into a little twist. Secure with a little hairspray at your center part, and at the base of the ponytail for a good hold.
Trick: Grab your comb and part your hair in the center of your forehead – for up to half and inch back before you pull up the ponytail.
Optional: Make the pony into a bun for a more up-swept style.

You figure that there is probably something that you should do before your styling appointment, but what? Wash it? No! This post is a guide for how to pre-style your hair for that big party hair appointment.

So, you are going to a fabulous party where you plan on meeting on future Mr. Right. And you have an appointment scheduled with me the afternoon of the party. So, you have your appointment to get yourself ready for the party, but how do you get yourself ready for your hair appointment?

1) Throw out day-old bread. Bring in day-old-hair.
First of all, never wash your hair the day of your hair appointment. I know this is totally counter-intuitive and it seems like you would never want your hairstylist to see “day-old hair.” But Actually, by not washing your hair that day, you have prepared it to style easier.

The outside of each of strand of your hair has a layer called the cuticle. If you wash your hair the morning of the party the cuticle will still be in shock and will not fully hold a curl and absolutely repel bobby and french hair pins. For some people, it takes a few hours for the fly aways to settle down. Also, hairspray clings better to “day old hair”.

2)Pre-style? Yes! Here’s how:
If you choose use to use a product for your pre-style, if should be a light cream. Nothing heavy. Just a little to smooth it down. Your stylist will use plenty of product later to get your hair into shape.

To pre-style your hair, start by washing it the night before. Then round-brush it out as you blow dry it. If you have curly or wavy hair, you might need to lightly iron it also. Do not over iron it and make it fall flat. Just a light flat ironing is all that is needed for most hair types.

Your child’s first hair cut is an exciting event for most moms, but little Susie or Bobby might not see things the same way. Since your child will probably be getting haircuts frequently from this point on, it is important that your child has a good first impression of your salon.

I cut the hair of several of my client’s children. I carefully explain to them each thing that I’m going to do (i.e. wash or wet their hair, trim it, brush it, buzz it, etc.) and what it will feel like. I also take the time to talk to them about stuff that they are interested in to keep their young minds off the haircut itself. Since the kid usually has also seen me cut their mom’s or dad’s hair, they are usually excited about their hair cut and they know what to expect.

Here are some of my tips on how to make the First Haircut a great experience:

  • As a parent, you can prepare your child for their first haircut by explaining to them in advance what a haircut is like.
  • Also show them that getting your own haircut is an enjoyable experience.
  • You may choose to take your child to your own stylist since they have met them before. Introduce your child to the hairstylist (i.e. “Remember, this is Jayme who cuts my hair too! She is going to cut your hair today so it will look really nice and neat!”)
  • Make sure that your child has been fed a balanced meal and gotten a good amount of rest before the session. Making sure that your child is as comfortable as possible for their first haircut will definitely make it a better experience for him or her.
  • You may even connect the haircut session with a reward, such as “There is an ice cream shop right next to the salon. Maybe we could get some ice cream after your haircut.”
  • If your child is a little ham and loves to have their picture taken, bring along your camera to emphasize that the haircut will make them look nice. You can also take the opportunity to record that first haircut moment. For most children it might be best to wait to take the picture when they are done, so they are less wiggly for the actual haircut.

Check out this article for parents getting their kid ready for their first haircut, from Parents.com.
